Ear:

If a child suddenly falls behind in class, the reason could be loss of hearing caused by glue ear that can be very easily detected and treated. Hearing problem in elderly people is a different issue where hearing aid is probably the best option. Hearing aid technology is advancing every day with aids smaller and more affordable available to within reach of the common man.

The children who are born deaf or anybody who has lost his hearing suddenly can have their hearing restored with cochlear implant technology, which means a surgery and training by audiologist.

Vast numbers of people suffer from ear infections and related complications. Some of them can be treated easily by eardrops or may be complicated enough to require Mastoid surgery. They may have their hole in the ear drum repaired at the same time or if the infection has destroyed the little bones essential for hearing, they can be synthetically replaced.

People who have dizziness can be due to inner ear problems. Careful examination and advanced testing of the inner ear usually finds the problem.

Nose:

Nose block, snoring, and sinusitis can present at any age groups. For children it may be due to tonsils and adenoids, while in adults the common causes are deviated nasal septum, polyps, allergies or increased size of turbinates.

Many adults snore. This can have serious health consequences in the long-term, i.e., hypertension, stroke, heart attack etc. It often becomes a cause for marital disharmony. Some of them may be choking at night or starving their brain of oxygen (sleep apnoea). It can be easily detected and treated.

Most of the surgery to the nose is now done with a telescope (endoscope) while looking through a television screen. A bent nose can be straightened and sinus infections can be cleaned. Even leaking brain fluid (CSF leak ) or some brain tumors can be treated via the nose with a endoscope.

Throat:

Recurrent tonsillitis may cause a child to miss school and fall behind in class. It may be associated with blocked nose, snoring and even sleep apnoea. Remedy is straightforward but usually surgery. Nowadays, almost bloodless surgery can be performed using modern methods in coblation, laser, etc.

Throat cancers are uncommon but need to be detected early and treatment with radiotherapy is taking precedence over surgery.
Voice problems need advanced diagnostic detection and if surgery is needed then it is a very delicate one. Laser is taking a more prominent role.

Head and Neck:

Tumors of the head and neck can arise anywhere in the head and neck region, including thyroid, parotid and other glands that can spread to the lymph nodes. These may be benign, but need to be investigated. Lumps in the neck, change in voice or difficulty in swallowing or breathing should not be neglected. Immediate diagnosis and treatment is a word of the day.

Aesthetic surgery:

An ageing face is not a disease, but in modern day and age more and more people are worried about the ageing lines on their faces. Botox, Laser or Frank surgery is usually offered.

Sometimes, the nose is bent from outside or children may be born with prominent ears (bat ears). Surgery is usually the answer.
